The reaction occurring during type III photoreactivation has been identified using dTpdT as a model system where it was discovered that irradiation of the (6-4) photoproduct (86) resulted in a photochemical electrocyclization reaction to give the Dewar pyrimidinone (87; Equation (6)).133–135 This photolesion apparently is less toxic to cells that show type III photoreactivation than the (6-4) photoproduct.
